Il testo di Starman è pieno di americanismi slang ("boogie", "that's far out", "don't tell your poppa", "some cat was laying down some rock 'n' roll") che si contrappongono alla sensibilità tipicamente britannica di Bowie creando un ibrido bizzarro e seducente. Tra le interpretazioni che il brano ha generato ci sono quella di un accenno alla seconda venuta di Cristo e addirittura l'accurata previsione della trama del film Incontri ravvicinati del terzo tipo del 1977. Secondo lo stesso Bowie, Starman potrebbe in realtà essere letta «a un livello più immediato come "In cielo c'è un uomo delle stelle che dice: spassatevela ragazzi", ma l'idea di base è che le creature dello spazio sono abbastanza reali e umane, e che la prospettiva di incontrare altri esseri dovrebbe renderci felici». Un'interpretazione che pone la canzone sulla stessa linea di un'altra molto posteriore, Looking for Satellites.
